Laminated MDF, also known as MDF laminate, as the name suggests is a combination of MDF and laminated.

In simple terms, when a laminated sheet is covered on the MDF surface then the product becomes MDF laminated.

To laminate an MDF board-

You’ll need an MDF board, laminate, foam insulation, contact cement, a j-roller, a trim router, and dowels. Once you have everything you need, it’s time to get started.

Step.1 Measure and Cut the Laminate

The first step is to measure and cut the laminate. Place it facedown on the foam insulation and cut each piece slightly oversized. This will allow you to trim it back for the best fit.

Step.2 Apply Contact Cement

Next, it’s time to apply contact cement to the MDF board and the laminate.

Apply a double coat of contact cement to both surfaces using a shortened roller. Let it get tacky before proceeding.

Step.3 Lower the Laminate onto the Dowels

Place some 1/2 inch dowels on the MDF board about 10 inches apart and lower the laminate onto the dowels.

This will give you the opportunity to get it positioned just right.

Don’t worry about the dowels sticking to the cement. The bond only happens when the sticky surface touches the sticky surface.

Step.4 Remove the Dowels

Gently remove the center dowel, letting the laminate sag onto the MDF surface. Press it down lightly and start removing the remaining dowels, moving from the center out. Use the roller to get that good solid contact and then trim the top flush to the sides.

Step.5 Trim Away the Excess

Use a trim router to cut away the excess laminate from the edges of the countertop. Be careful not to damage the laminate or the MDF board.

Step.6 Sand Off Sharp Edges

The final step is to sand off any sharp edges and clean up any excess glue. This will give your countertop a smooth and professional finish.

Getting woodcuts is not a big task, all you need to know is the right places where you can bring in your lumbers and get them cut.

Some will charge you, and others not. This is completely uncertain to guess, and prices change from store to store, and place to place. 

There, sure you might have some unique ideas in your mind for which you need your wood to be cut in a precise manner.

Or maybe not only cuts, but you also want to get your wood planed, or edged, or whatsoever. 

Places that will cut wood for you

  • Home Depot: You can get wood cut from Home Depot stores. Look for the store in your city near to you and tell them about your cutting needs.
  • Lowes: They also cut wood for their customers, ask your local lowes store about their policies.
  • Menards: It’s a kind of DIY store, but many menard stores has saws available for basic wood cutting. One of the places you can get your wood cut.
  • Localcarpenter: Find any carpenter in your city. Ask your friends to refer you the best carpenter, you can get your wood get cut in this way.
  • Woodworking teaching center: if there is a woodworking teaching center nearby, then ask the instructor if you want to use their tools or allow their students to practice on your wood by helping you cut your wood into peices.
  • Lumberyard: The best place for all your woodworking tasks is a lumberyard, search for any lumber yard in your city to get your wood tasks to get done by professionals.

1. Home Depot

Home Depot is one of the most popular home improvement stores.

They sell different types of wood, lumber, and composite or plywood.

For cutting wood into sizes to allow their customers to take away wood easily.

The backside of many home depot stores has cutting tools available.

So, It’s one of the places you can visit if you want to get your woodcuts.

How to proceed.

To proceed, make sure you have purchased the lumbers from The Home Depot if you want to get some free, straight cuts.

Home Depot has a cutting policy for its customers only.

You can show them the lumber you purchased from their store to get some free cuts.

But unfortunately, lumbers purchased from other stores will not be cut- or you will be charged a few bucks for each cut.

Quality of cuts.

The cuts from Home depot will be straight- no desired and angle cuts, and expect to have some inaccuracy.

Although the quality of the cuts you will get depends on the operator, which is obviously different from place to place.

So, if you’re lucky enough, chances are the person cutting your wood into sizes might be an expert.

Limitations of tools.

Before taking your wood to your local home depot store.

Note that, they don’t have all the tools available that you might need.

With that being said, they have industrial power tools only, table saws mainly for basic cutting. No miter saw, no circular saw, etc. 

2. Lowes

Lowes stores also cut wood for their customers. Basic cuts only are when a customer purchases large lumber that needs to be cut into small sizes for loading.

Although they don’t offer desired woodcutting to customers, it’s fine to can ask if you have different measurements for the cuts.

They might charge you some bucks for each cut. Occasionally, the staff will satisfy customer demands- but not always. Each location store has its own policy regarding wood cutting.

How to proceed.

Like Home Depot, their cutting policies are only for their customers, who have purchased wood from their store.

So it’s a nice place for both, purchasing wood and cutting.

Such big box stores cut wood so that it can be easily carried and loaded.

Anyways, mind that you may not be cut to your specifications.

Quality of cuts.

To be honest, the cuts will not be so-called precise or accurate.

The reason is simple, they don’t hire expert carpenters to do the cutting job, instead, they are the employees who work in the stores that come and operate the tool.

Sometimes you may get good cuts if the operator knows the work, but you should anticipate some inaccuracy in their cutting beforehand.

Limitation of tools.

Like Homedepot, they have industrial cutting tools only. Simply, they are for making large cuts. So if you want small cuts or angle cuts.

They might not work for you. But it’s nice to ask the staff directly or on a phone call about the cuts you need- Of course, before purchasing from their stores.

3. Menards

Many Menards stores also have saws available in their stores- to make convenience cuts, not desired.

Although, you can inquire the workers to make desired cuts or ask them to cut your wood piece that’s not purchased from their store.

In some areas, the workers will ask you for some charges for pay per cut. 

How to proceed.

If there is any Menard home improvement store near your home or workshop.

First, you should call them and ask the basic questions on the phone.

Note their policies first before taking the wood to the store. Sometimes they are happy to treat their customers for some extra charges. However, policies differ in every store, so first inquire about them.

Quality of cuts.

Like other big box stores, Menard’s cutting quality is not so good.

However, it greatly depends on the person who will cut the wood. But looking at their saw’s blade, it was very rough mostly. Expect to have some inaccuracy in cutting.

Limitation of tools.

Only industrial saws are available, which means only large cuts will be made.

For smaller cuts such as 2-by-4, the place for cutting wood is not ideal for you.

4. Ace Hardware

Some ace hardware stores offer cutting wood services, also pay-per-cut services are being provided in my area, not so sure whether or not you get this benefit. I would suggest you ask them on a phone call. 

How to proceed.

Search for a hardware store near you in your city. Get their phone number to contact them and ask about their policies for wood cutting. Mind that, many ace hardware stores only sell small hardware but a few stores sell laminate boards and wood lumber as well. So they have cutting tools.

Quality of cuts.

I’m not sure about the quality of their wood-cutting services since I had never been to the store. Home Depot is near to me so I often go there to purchase wood lumber. 

Limitation of tools.

You will only get woodcuts in large sizes, as the industrial tools are not able to cut wood below 4-by-3. Also, there will only be table saws available for fine cuts. Don’t expect angle cuts or bevel cuts as they don’t keep circular saws and miter saws.

5. Local Lumber yards

Take your wood to any lumber yard located in your area. Ask them to cut your wood, and give them proper measurements. If you have not purchased from them, they will charge for cutting. Though one of the pros the lumber yards offer, workers out there are highly experts and expect to get any kind of woodcut in a precise manner. 

How to proceed.

Use Google Maps to see any lumber yards near your location. Simply download the google map or search on google for” lumber yards near me.” The results might help you. Also, you can get the contact details, and ask about the procedure and the type of wood services they offer. If all seems satisfactory, then the place will be suitable for your wood projects. However, don’t forget to ask about their charges.

Quality of cuts.

At lumber yards, you will get some quality cuts made on your wood. Not only that but also the advice from experts, and their experience surely will benefit you. Let them know your project, what you’re up to, and what cuts and wood services you need. 

Limitation of tools

Speaking of the tools available at the lumber store, in my city. They have almost every tool like table saws, and circular saws, and they also keep tools like planets, edgers, and sanders for other woodwork. As a whole, you can say the lumberyards are the best place to purchase wood if you don’t have the right tools to work with, and also if you’re uncertain about the measurements.

6. Local Woodworking shops

Local woodworking shops are also a good option to look for wood-cutting services. Although such workshops sell engineered wood (boards) yet they can have cutting tools. Try reaching out, you might get the best deals.

How to proceed.

You might have to find the nearby woodworking shops on your own and ask people to find the best one for you. Visit the shop and tell them your requirements and the kind of woodworking services you need. Don’t forget to ask them about the charges.

Quality of cuts.

The quality of woodcuts might be better than what you get from big box stores. But don’t expect precision like an expert carpenter.

Limitation of tools

There are no specific limitations about the tools they can have or not. It depends on the region, but chances are you will be able to get small-size woodcuts from local workshops.

7. Local Carpenters

In almost every city, an expert local carpenter can be found easily. Who owns the tools? 

How to proceed.

Do some research at finding the best carpenters, and ask your friends if the workshop you have purchased the wood from is not providing cutting services. Ask them if they know any skilled expert carpenters. 

Quality of cuts.

It’s one of the best ways to have some quality cuts done to your wood. Local carpenters typically spend the entire day doing woodworking tasks. With that in mind, you can get the peace of mind that you will get quality cuts.

Limitation of tools

You cannot know which tools the carpenter owns, so you will have to contact him on a phone call or in person. 

8. Local Woodworking teaching centers.

Look for any local woodworking teaching center near you. They are a good place to get some cuts in exchange for the experience of the students. But such centers might not be available in all regions.

How to proceed.

Visit the center and talk to the instructor that you have some wood pieces that need some sort of cutting and that you for some reason don’t own the tools or are not able to use them. In most cases, the instructors out there are happy to help, as long as they need some wood for testing their student’s skills.

Quality of cuts.

Since the place you bought the wood is basically a student’s teaching center. So don’t expect that the cuts will be super precise as they might be at their learning stage. So only consider it a place that will cut wood for you for free if you are sure to have some mistakes or rough cuts.

Limitation of tools

Most probably you will be able to find every useful tool out there in such a woodworking teaching center. Included a planner, saws table, and circular both, sanders, so it’s a pretty good place to get woodworking work done. 

About tools

Band Saw:

With these saws, you can cut large logs with exact precision. With a band saw, one continuous metal band is fitted with two (or more) rotating wheels. Due to its precision, these saws provide better cuts than a typical circular saw.

Chain Saw:

Any type of wood, soft or hardwood, can be cut through with a chainsaw. They are a valuable tool in woodworking. Cutting high-density wood becomes easy since its brute power makes it ideal for rough. 

Gangsaw:

Multi-cutting is possible with Gangsaw. It can be used as part of a plank-making process with the help of a conveyor belt.

Circular Saw:

Large pieces of wood are cut with the circular saw into straight and angled cuts. Carpenter uses them to create angles like 45 and 90 degrees to cut wide beams.

Table Saw:

Any lumber yard would be incomplete without this saw. It serves as a fast, efficient, and safe way of cutting lumber into a manageable size.

Planer:

At the lumber yard, your wood will be cut and then planned to even out the thickness as necessary. A planer is a crucial tool for rough cuts since it smooths the lumber, making it easier to handle.

Edger:

After the cutting process has been completed, an edger is used to smooth out rough lumber that has bowed.

Will wood catch fire on the oven?


If you want to keep wood in your oven for some reason- either for drying purposes or for cooking something and want to make yourself sure whether the wood will get burned or smoked all over the room.

Will wood catch fire in an oven?

Not necessarily a wooden piece will catch fire when you keep it inside an oven.

It depends on the temperature, wood type, and ventilation inside the oven.

Being an enclosed space, the wood will not catch fire inside an oven immediately. But still, it will when the wood reaches its burning point and if there is enough oxygen for fire chemical reaction to take place.

  • Placing the wood in a 700°F oven. Ignite the wood almost immediately.
  • After heating a block of wood in an oven at low temperature for too long, may cause fire to take place.
  • The wood is a solid material, it tends to char more slowly than plywood and usually takes several hours for ignition if the temperature exceeds 450°-500°F.
  • For drying purposes, keep the temperature low and wait for a day or two until all the moisture content get out.

So wood won’t begin to burn till it reaches its burning point, keeping it in an oven. Know that ovens have some very hot spots- higher temps in areas next to their top/bottom/sides. Thus, making it difficult for the in-built thermometer to measure the exact temperature. 

Why you should not put wood in an oven?

Smoke is one of the reasons you should avoid doing so, as wood burning will create smoke damage and ruin the stove at a minimum.

  • The air inside your house won’t be able to breathe if you have no ventilation, so if you burn enough, you’ll experience smoke damage.
  • The creosote created by burning wood is carcinogenic and prone to ignition, so you could end up burning your house down while poisoning yourself.

Fire requires three things to occur: heat, oxygen, and a fuel source to ignite. In the following case, we have these three main components: heat, fuel (wood), and oxygen can be available inside an oven. 

The oxygen is missing in the following case, keeping wood to not to catch fire, though kitchen regular ovens seem an enclosed space but still can allow enough oxygen to react.

Putting wood in an oven

Putting wood in an oven for too long unintentionally can cause ignition, smoke-problems. Or worst, the oven will blast out.

  • An oven might be a closed room but it isn’t totally airtight. Therefore, When wood gets heat in the oven, inside the oven some gases are born- a sort of chemical reaction. The spent combustion gases and there are not enough openings for air to circulate. 

In other words, if wood gets hot for too long, it would smolder and smoke, but not necessarily ignite long as if there is a way out for the gases.

  • Mind that, regular kitchen ovens are not fully airtight, so the concern of air circulation inside the oven is still something to pay attention to. In simple words, other than smoke, the risk of ignition is still there.

Dangers of putting wood in an oven

Jumping next to the step, when you are done putting wood in an over. What could happen is that the wood will absorb too much heat, it might reach its ignition state. 

  • Considering the two factors that have been triggered, 1) temperature is high, 2) fuel (wood) is too hot, the only missing factor is the low-oxygen level. At this state, when you open the oven, gases inside the oven will mix with the outside to complete the chemical process. Resulting in a blast, ignition, or explosion instantly.
  • Don’t open the oven too early when you’re cooking something like a pizza using a wooden plate, or crockery. Chances are there could be a sudden explosion. Wait till the temperature turns down a bit.

Is it safe to put wood in an oven?

The simplest answer is that: It’s not safe to put wood in an oven unless you know what you’re doing, and what are precautions you should take care of.

What’s your purpose? If this is something you’re going to dry a piece of wood in an oven.

And you know that at a certain temperature the wood will catch fire, try to keep the temperature minimum and give some breaks at each point. And in the case of ignition problems, already prepared for if that happens.

What temperature does wood catch fire?

There is no specific temperature to tell at what temperature a wood will catch fire. It depends on two major things. Usually, temperature above 600 Fahrenheit is the trigger to ignite many kinds of wood, in the presence of oxygen. Otherwise, expect to deal with coal and smoke.

  • Different types of wood have different burning points. Usually, woods with low density catch fire sooner than that of higher densities, about plywoods or chipboards, they catch fire too in an oven.
  • Fresh wood or green wood will catch fire sooner than klin dried woods. Because fresh wood contains some liquids, making the wood less susceptible to getting burned.

How To Clean An Oven after wood burned?

For some reason, if your oven has been a victim wood burned inside it, here’s are some quick steps to repair or clean it for your next time bake.

  • Wear a mask– You need to take safety precautions as you will be cleaning extinguisher chemicals out of the oven. In addition, close contact of the chemical with the skin can cause irritations, allergic reactions, so wearing a mask is a must thing so you can keep your lungs safe.
  • Use vacuum– Get a hose extension for your vacuum cleaner. You can use a vacuum cleaner to remove any dirt and chemical particles inside the oven before starting to clean it.
  • Use a brush- To remove the remnants of dry agent or debris from tiny spaces that the vacuum hose cannot reach, grab a dustpan or small brush that will do the trick.
  • Use water soap or cleaning agent to wash- simply wipe the oven with a sponge or a cloth dipped in water. Clean the inside of the oven with a wet sponge after the plug has been removed.
  • Use a dry-cleaner to kill the gems- You should then use an oven cleaner to get rid of any unnoticed dirt, germs, or bacteria that may have been left in your oven. This means that the oven will be pristine and ready to bake cakes and delicious treats.

If you’re oven has, you can use the automatic cleaning option that will kill the germs by heating itself. But do it when the oven is ready to be used.

How strong is cedar wood?


Cedarwood has many types, some are stronger and others are not that much.

The strongest species in cedarwood according to the Janka tool, is red cedarwood. The sheet strength of 900 LBS is insane for softwood like this. To be honest, many kinds of wood do not match the strength it has. 

in the industries, cedarwood is a perfect choice. It does not get warped, shrank, yellowish, like many other kinds of wood do. Plus, its natural scent makes it insect-proof.

You can know the hardness and comprehensive strength of the woods through a tool known as, the Janka scale. 

According to the Janka scale, the woods are marked higher for their more hardness.

It ranks Cedar accordingly:

  • Red Cedar- 900 Ibf 

Red Cedar is also famous as Juniperus Virginiana, Pencil cedar, and Eastern Juniper. It grows in eastern North America. Due to its slow growth, it appears to be an expensive choice of softwood. The strong aroma lets the insects and moths remain away from it.

  • Alaskan Cedar- 580 Ibf

Alaskan Yellow Cedar is readily available in Canada and Alaska. You cannot ignore the beauty of creamy yellow-colored straight grain wood. It is a relatively hard type of Cedar. Its strength and unique characteristic of weather resistance make it an excellent choice for marine construction and park benches.

  • White & Red cedar- 320-250 Ibf

Despite the similar properties to other cedars, it still mesmerizes and captivates the users with the fantastic aroma. You will find it hard to resist the blend of lemony and spicy scents. Feel free to make small unique pieces like toys and candlesticks.

  • Port Orford Cedar- 720 Ibf

Port Orford cedar grows in Northern California and Oregon. You will not find it easily everywhere. It is rare, and some private lands provide little quantity of its harvest. Therefore, don’t count it as an affordable choice. 

  • Incense Cedar- 470 Ibf

Incense Cedar Remain in the limelight for its outstanding aroma. The dark red streaks with the light brown color make it highly appealing for the eyes. This version of the cedar wood is durable and highly weather resistant. You can cut and give it your desired shape seamlessly.

Mark it as your favorite choice if you wish to swirl your head in the sweet scent of it from your chest of drawers and storage chests. Nevertheless, you can use its non- splintering grain for the pencils.

Is cedar is softwood or hardwood?

Cedar belongs to the gymnosperms category that means non-flowering trees. In comparison, the hardwood belongs to angiosperms plants.

What are clamping cauls in woodworking?


When mentioning different terms in woodworking. We often ignore telling newcomers about cauls and their importance.

And why should you need them for your gluing-up project? 

In this blog post, we have attempted to provide everything you need to know about cauls. 

Have you ever wondered!

What did our predecessors (carpenters) use when they needed to affix something large like a board or a panel?

Usually when multiple panels of 48″ or greater need to be glued together.

They did not use clamps, because the clamps we have today weren’t available at that time. 

Let me tell you. They used wood cauls in most of the gluing-up projects.

But not with clamps like we do, instead they used to exert pressure to both sides by putting weight so that panels would adhere tightly.

Here is what are cauls in woodworking?

It’s no science to understand the term “cauls” in woodworking, they are simply pieces of wood used for gluing-up projects. 

When clamping a large panel for instance we use cauls to exert pressure in the middle- as the curve bends inside, as well as exert pressure on areas that are beyond the reach for standard clamps so we can get a flat glue-up regardless of the longevity of the panels being glued. 

They make it easy to get a strong bond, and also reduce the number of clamps to be used in a project.

They are mostly needed when joining large panels because standard clamps only pressure on the edges.

And on larger panels, there is a need to pressure them in the middle.

What does a wood caul actually work?

As we’ve mentioned they are basically beams made of wood, nothing else is to describe here tough.

However, given them, a name makes them an important tool in woodworking. 

So we use them for exerting pressure where panels cannot reach.

Their shape is actually curved, allowing more pressure to be exerted.

As the curve in the caul bends towards the panel being glued in the course of pressure.

The other end will be slightly raised when it is clamped to the panel. 

However, the second end, when clamped to the panels, applies pressure to the panel center. 

You will achieve an even and solid glue-up this way.

Let’s illustrate this by taking a working example.

Imagine you got two large panels.

Now you want to face gluing them to increase thickness, perhaps for crafting a tabletop or a door. 

To proceed you will have to apply pressure evenly to the panels after gluing them so there are no gaps and you can get a flat glue-up as your result. 

Despite the fact, if gaps exist, even small gaps can weaken the bonding strength and you will not achieve a flat result.

And if you only use standard clamps, when bonding larger panels, the majority of clamps will not reach the middle regardless of the number of clamps you have in your workplace.

Both F clamps and perpendicular clamps would not do the trick unless you use cauls.

There comes down the use of wood cauls.

By using 2 by 4s sized cauls you will have to overlap panels needed to be glued together.

After that, you can press on the edges with the F clamps, while distributing pressure evenly throughout the surface. 

Reasons: Why do you need clamping cauls in gluing-ups?

Clamping cauls is like a helping hand regardless of the gluing project you are dealing with. 

Some of the benefits of the cauls are listed below.

Create pressure beyond standard clamps- They are frequently used to apply pressure to a bigger surface where standard clamps may not be effective. 

Keep the panel flat during glue-up- When you glue, the most important thing to remember is to make sure that the panel is flat from all over the surface.

For this, the wood cauls do the trick since they create pressure which helps large panels get clamped thoroughly.

Minimize the amount of work- Even if your clamps can create in the middle, assuming the panels are not that big.

In spite of this, you can still minimize the amount of work by using cauls since they create more pressure and require a few clamps.

Keep the panels aligned- During a panel glue-up, cauls are often used to keep the boards aligned, since it is important to keep the panels steady during the process.

A little movement can ruin the process and you will need to restart from the beginning again. A situation you do not want to occur.

How thick should Cauls be?

It is important to keep in mind the cauls’ flexibility. Thinner materials are less flexible and more fragile, which leads to them snapping. 

The 2-1/2″ thickness is ideally suited to cauls that measure about two to three feet in length.

  • So When making cauls of larger beams such as 28″ long, keep the thickness minimum 2-1/2″ thick, and 1-3/4″ wide.

How to choose a suitable material for making Wooden Cauls?

Before we start demonstrating, there are some factors regarding the material you will be using that you should take into account.
